Join us Wednesday, January 31 at 5 PM at the Captain Nathaniel B. Palmer House, when Historic Stonington (formerly the Stonington Historical Society) will host a book club discussion on Anthony Bailey's In the Village. Anthony Bailey's intimate look at life in Stonington borough made waves when it was published. First appearing in 1971 as a serialized version in the New Yorker, a hard-cover version was published soon thereafter, and in 1992, a second paperback edition was printed locally and soon sold out. In the Village was not universally embraced by all of Stonington's longstanding residents. Some felt his narrative was too personal and were upset to see their characters so sharply drawn, while others thought it was perfect and were disappointed not to find themselves delineated in its pages. The book now serves as a snapshot in time. This 50th anniversary edition includes the full text of the original as well as Bailey's introduction to the 1992 edition and also benefits from the addition of select photographs by Rollie McKenna from the archives of Historic Stonington. If you don't have a copy of the book yet, they are available for purchase on Historic Stonington's website (historicstonington.org) or at their giftshop at the Nathaniel B. Palmer House on Palmer Street in Stonington (between 8 AM and 3 PM). Registration is required for this event which is free of charge (form can be found by navigating to the event on Historic Stonington's calendar or at this direct link: historicstonington.org/event/book-club-discussion-in-the-village/).
