Hilary Pierce, Curator and President of Art Collector's Athenaeum
Hilary Pierce curated the eclectic art collection for The Caf with the inspiration of Café Society and the arts.
The term Café Society evolved from the early 1900's European restaurant and café scene. Immigrants arriving in the United States continued with café culture by establishing and patronizing exciting new American Cafés and Clubs. In the roaring twenties. Cafés were a nexus of modern art, bold literature and dynamic new jazz music, all enjoyed by a rising middle class and American icons like Reginald Marsh, Dorothy Parker, and Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Café Society continued through the 1930's, in spite of cultural crackdowns like Prohibition and well into the 1940's with growth of Hollywood and the post-war boom. The Café collection celebrates this arc of art and culture.
