Description

Some say the stone circles and stone chambers and rows of granite slabs are the 6th-century work of followers of Saint Brendan, an Irish monk of the era. Others make connections to Viking stone structures in Newfoundland or Arctic peoples during the time of the glaciers. Join us as we consider these mysteries and explore Gungywamp, a Connecticut archaeological site of natural and cultural interest, as seen on the History Channel!

This guided hike with DPNC naturalist Al Brown explores the rocky ridges, glacial erratics and swamps along with the mysterious stone shelter and structures whose use and origin are open to interpretation. Walk with us through the woods and absorb the centuries of mystery of Gungywamp.

The Gungywamp property is stewarded by DPNC, and is accessed via our guided hikes.
Meets in the parking area at the former Shepherd of the Sea Chapel, 231 Gungywamp Road, Groton. A Gungywamp hike is for adults and families who are comfortable walking two miles of moderate difficulty over uneven terrain.
